Ephesians 3:20-21

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Behind the Scenes

I love that the book of Ephesians was written by a man who murdered Christians and was later put to prison for his faith (not for the murders though). If God can do a good work through a flawed human like that, I think He can use me, and I think He can use you, too. And Paul writes that God does more than we can ask or think according to His power within us, through Him. I need to constantly remind myself that I have access to His spirit no matter what mess I have gotten myself into!

The verse that precedes this one talks about how the love of Christ surpasses all knowledge. I love the image of Paul sitting in a damp, dark cell with ink and papyrus, his cup overflowing with Christ’s love for him despite the acts of hate he committed. The irony of Paul authoring this message is almost unfathomable. In Galatians, he mentions that his handwriting was ‘large’, so I picture huge, jumbled block letters still used as scripture today. I imagine a beautiful, clean papyrus massacred to the human eye, but profound when understood. His physical body was in prison, but he was free. His body, caged by humans, wrote words that would last forever.

And I equally love the second part of the passage. “To him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever.” That power written through prison ink is the same as the one you just read above, typed on a laptop. Paul could not have known that you would be reading this devotional today,  but God’s word lasts forever!

Make it Real

Scripture is a testament to what God can do through us. We, in our toil, in our mundane have access to the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives…the same Holy Spirit that Paul wrote this text with. If Paul had access to His Spirit in prison, we also have access in our everyday lives if we so choose to enter in that space with Him. We have full access to His Spirit and Freedom. And you know what the best part about all of that is? There is NOTHING you can do to ruin that. Paul murdered God’s beloved children, and through redemption, Jesus loved Paul as much as he loves you. No matter how you may feel you have failed, He gives you access to things beyond understanding. He gives you access to His wisdom, and if you pray and ask for it, you might just be blown away. If this doesn’t give you courage today, I don’t know what will. He loves you yesterday, today, and tomorrow!

Much love!

End in Prayer

Jesus,

I pray that you would be with me today. I pray that you would give me wisdom beyond knowledge. I know that you love me even when I feel that I don’t deserve it. Thank you that I have the same access to you as Paul did when he wrote from prison. Thank you that no matter what I have done, you desire to fill my cup with your abundance.

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen
