Resurrection and Life
Slide

We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin.”

Romans 6:4-7

Behind the Scenes

Oh, my heart!! This passage is near and dear to me, because it is an intimate connection between Jesus and ourselves. We are correlated to the most sacrificial event in human history — the death of Jesus on the cross. I so often perceive this as an event of something that was done for me, and it’s easy to forget that I, too, died to my selfish ways through Him. It was not on a cross and did not cause me physical pain, and I am thankful that Jesus carried that burden for me and for you. Because of his death, we get to walk ANEW. It is an honor to be compared to Jesus regarding such an event.

We, however, are not without sin and fall back to our old ways repeatedly without Him. In the sermon series, “Hunted,” we are reminded that we are in a spiritual warfare, and that we have an enemy who seeks our destruction. The phrase that stuck out with me the most last Sunday was that Satan’s decoy for us is oftentimes partially true. If you have been struggling with feelings of shame, anger, defeat, or exhaustion, I encourage you to speak these feelings out through prayer. When we were raised out of the water through baptism, those were buried! Any negative thought or sinful way was put to rest. We are human, and so they oftentimes creep back up, but let your heart be alive and new! In verse six, we are told that we are no longer enslaved in sin.

Make It Real

I’ll be real with you. I struggle with shame almost daily, which causes me to strive. I try to fill about seventy-eight hours into a twenty-four hour day because I never feel like I do enough. When I take moments for myself, I feel guilty. “I should be helping someone.” “I should be cleaning.” “I should be doing something that will result in purpose in my life.” "I should, I should, I should...". I allow thoughts to enter into my mind and weigh me down almost constantly, and I cannot even take a moment to rest in God.

I am here to admit and confess this to you, because I choose right now to bury these. I am a daughter of the King. You are a daughter or son of the King. I choose right now to leave that behind me, because the death on the cross was sufficient for me!

And finally, verse seven sums it all up. “For one who has died has been set free of sin.” Every day is a new day to die to our old selves and be like Jesus. To be alive and ANEW. Amen.

Jesus, thank you that you created me to be like you. Please forgive me for owning going back to my old pattern of thought. I ask that you would help me recognize the things that were once buried so that I can be alive and new in you today. Thank you for your grace, patience, and love for me. May I be more like you every day. Amen!
