Truth...what is truth? It’s funny that in our current culture, defining that word is tricky. Doesn’t that seem a little ironic? We would say that truth is what is real. But all too often, truth is seen as subjective and changing. I’ve heard it said, “if it’s true to you, then it’s true” or “define your truth.” But the very nature of truth contradicts those statements.

We need a measuring stick if we are ever to be able to pin down what truth really is. We need a constant, something outside of ourselves, something unchanging and not bias. We need a guide by which we can test each idea for whether it is true or false. We cannot rely on our own feelings because those change. We cannot rely on culture because that also changes. We cannot rely on perceptions because your perception and mine can be very different. So, what can we rely on?

This question is a really important one that we all need to ask eventually. And this question makes me so glad that Jesus gave us this week’s I AM statement. Jesus left us in no doubt about how we measure truth. We measure it by Him and Him alone. He is our truth. He is the only reliable measure of truth.

When you read that Jesus is the definition of truth, how does that make you feel? Do you ruffle at that? Do you question it? What happens when God’s truth and our truth do not line up? Do we negotiate with God, hoping that He will change His mind and see it our way? Do we rationalize our truth and try and justify why we are right? Or do we submit to the truth of Jesus, even when we don’t agree or we don’t see it His way? Do we believe that His truth is more true than anything else?

I love David’s heart in this Psalm. In today’s passage, David writes a statement that reveals His dedication to God’s truth. He asks God to lead him in God’s truth. David then follows it up with a declaration of his faith in God and the commitment to wait on His truth no matter how long it takes.

How does that hit you? Can you relate to David’s cry or do you struggle with that? As for me, I know there have been some seasons in my life where I wouldn’t have agreed with David. I might have said those words, but in my heart I didn’t believe them. But as I have learned to trust God, to test His truths, and to rest in His faithfulness, I have started to understand David’s heart in this Psalm.

So where are you this week? Take a few minutes to ask yourself where your heart is. Do you agree with God’s truth over your own? Do you trust Him more than you trust yourself? What steps can you take to move toward the truth of God this week?

Lord,

I want Your truth over mine. Help me to rest in Your truth. You are my God and my Savior. I trust You and I choose to wait on Your eternal truth over my own.
