“Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom the glory be forever and ever. Amen.”
Hebrews 13:20-21
This passage serves as the benediction for Hebrews. It wraps up the entirety of Hebrews which challenges Jesus followers to remain faithful to Him as the One who is the ultimate revelation of God’s love and mercy. There is so much packed in these two verses that we can glean from in our daily lives.
I love contrasts. I like the thought of a hot drink on a cold day. A flower among thorns. A laugh amidst a terrible day. I love the phrase in the above passage, “the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus.” Usually when we think of death, it evokes fear or sadness, but here in this passage, we are reminded that death does not have the final say, and that only our God of peace make that so. Peace and death go hand in hand with our God. The blood of the eternal covenant equips us with everything good. But, only through Him are we capable of doing these good things.
This scripture reminds me that we need to look to God for peace amidst the chaos, because outside of Him, it is found nowhere. Let me say that again. It is found NOWHERE. I oftentimes find myself wondering why my heart feels unsettled, why I have anxious thoughts, why I feel like a failure, or why I feel like I am drowning in incompetence, and then I read scripture like this and I simply exhale. Ahhhh.
I’ve been striving when I don’t have to. The blood of the eternal covenant equips us with everything good. But, only through Him are we capable of doing these good things. When I look to my Maker each and every day, I am reminded that He has me covered with the blood of His covenant on the cross. When I strive on my own accord, my heart grows unsettled, and in that moment, I am incapable of receiving the blessing of His sacrifice for me. Wherever your heart is today, check in with it! Look to Him for peace, because we cannot find it elsewhere, and without it, we cannot give glory to our Father.
Father,
Thank you that you are the God of peace. I pray that you would help me to glean from your peace so that my heart will free of anxious thoughts. Thank you for your patience with me, and I ask to be equipped with your wisdom so that I may do your will. Thank you that death does not have the final say, and that I can receive complete peace in your name, and in your name alone. Amen!
