“And my God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

This week we are looking at the statement, “I am the Bread of Life.” And our verse today is packed full of wisdom about our Sustainer.

I was reading a commentary on it, and it is so good. In the verses before this, Paul was writing about how the church at Philippi had supplied his every need. How they partnered with Paul in his mission while other churches did not. Then he goes on to say that God will do the same for them. God will supply every need of yours! I love when the Bible has absolutes – every, all, nothing, etc. It’s so direct and clear.

God will supply EVERY need – but let’s not miss what follows here – according to His riches. This is where it gets good – and totally blew my mind. The commentator pointed out that this means God will supply ALL that you need (in the Spirit), but not in excess (in the Flesh). He will give us exactly what we need to have an abundant spiritual life. You see, we think an abundant life means more money, more things, more success. In God’s economy, an abundant life is different. It may mean more of those things if they will grow you spiritually and make you look more like Jesus, but often times the things of this world only bring destruction.

We’ve all seen it splashed all over the news and tabloid covers. Rising stars that completely lose it. I think of Britney Spears here. She “had it all” – fame, fortune, success, and she lost her ever loving mind. It was too much, and she couldn’t handle it. Or what about those who win the lottery? So often the same thing happens to them. They have an excess of money, spend it in the flesh, and plummet to ruin.

But we have a God that knows exactly what we need. Isn’t He so good?!? In Him, we have everything we need. He tells us that in this scripture – He gives us all we need according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. He IS the Bread of Life. And I know I would much rather have His generosity and live in His glory than in the glory of this broken world. Yeah, we will have trouble. Jesus told us that in John 16:33. “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” But God gives us ALL we need! In the Bread of Life, we will have peace, we will have every need supplied, and we can live according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
